Try Wait

Try Wait is an effort to reverse the declines we observed, so that we can manage from a place of abundance, rather than depletion.

Today we sacrifice, so that the future generations can be fed.

Process to develop a Fisheries Management Plan

Our Goal

To return productive and sustainable subsistence fishing to our home

The intention of Try Wait was to replenish our fisheries stocks, so that we can reopen fishing from a place of abundance and with a sustainable fisheries plan in place.

For many years we have been deliberating on what the fisheries plan should include, and through thoughtful discussion with our fishing ʻohana, the State Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) and Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement (DOCARE), and partners. We have made four revisions to the Fisheries Management Plan to integrate the feedback received.

We are now ready to submit the fisheries plan to the State for approval through the administrative rulemaking process.

Our process to draft a fisheries management plan included these decision making principles to guide us.

From Try Wait to Worth the Wait

For many who care for this coast, the return of healthier ecosystems is a reminder that some things are truly worth the wait.

We anticipate that the proposed rules may be brought forward to the Board of Land and Natural Resources in coming weeks as part of the rulemaking process.

We will continue to post updates on this website and via social media for opportunities to support the Kaʻūpūlehu community throughout the process to adopt the Fisheries Management Plan.
